The stuff that Dennis Bovell apparently invented is what I associate with U.K. lovers rock and abhor. If there's anything you think is above par and not sappy nor soft, RUN IT!
Glamour you have any tunes in this genre you rate?

Does the Wild Bunch stuff on Ariwa come under the Lovers Rock umbrella?

(not my favourite tune from that LP but there isn't much on the youtoob : and I'm guessing it's not lovers rock cos they aren't love songs.)

Well if that's the right genre, then yeah I agree with you that there isn't a whole bunch of great music there. I like that Wild Bunch album but the more "lovey" tunes that Sandra Cross did after that I can live without. And I like Silly Games :)

I appreciate that growing up with Silly Games that you might gravitate towards it...
I only like one Janet Kay 12" that I'm aware of especially the instrumental!

Right before we get to the lovers thing I have to pull you up on dennis bovell. Yes agreed he did a load of cross over mainstream rubbish but was also responsible for some heavyweight tunes. Here are three admittadely roots tunes from the 70's but they show there is more to him than Janet Kay

Ok is it me that is confused? :o When I think U.K. lovers I think 15, 16, 17, Janet Kay etc. But NOTHING Chaz you have listed, that is all to me good U.K. tunes. Maybe a handful of Lloyd Brown tunes are in the style I'm describing, but he is a solid singer. The Sharon Tucker tune Dangerous listed I'd consider in a U.K. lovers style. Icy calm is a good saying that I like to use sometimes too!

ah i see the confusion. I've just been talking about lovers, ie a tune with lovers lyrics, or relating to love. Don't think I've added the rock word anywhere. You're talking about something completely different which I think we all agree is shite. Does that clear it up for you. I was concerned when you said you didn't rate uk lovers when what you meant was lovers rock, different kettle of fish. Glad we cleared that up. hope we can all move on
