wicked show fi real... had a smile on my face all night. Lady Saw really showed Melbourne why they call them "entertainers" in Jamaica, and Bunny Rugs was pure class as always. bit of a shame the numbers weren't higher, but with so little promotion it was to be expected....

Lady Saw was truly wicked! Refreshing to see a dancehall and female artist too. Although her version of feminism may differ slightly from mine  I respect her approach, she sang and djed mainly for the ladies and was fire and guts pon the mic. She was truly entertaining and at times touched on some serious woman tings. Bunny Rugs' session with the Melbourne band with no name was first class too. The crowd that was still there was diminished, but totally hyped. Both acts deserved much more promo and hype.
Also I really didn't think the ska selectors were appropriate support acts for this kind of a show. This could've been given way more thought. The obvious thing to do would've been to have at least ONE female support act and some dancehall element. Just my 2 cents...

I agree TM, that the lineup was very strange... at times I felt like I was inside the film Blue Velvet, but unfortunately not in a good way!

Anyway, Lady Saw! Bunny Rugs! Yay! :crazygal:

I couldnt agree more. It was dissapointing to only see a couple of hundred in the place. Even ONE flyer drop at a reggae gig would have doubled the attendence.

The set up was a bit dissapointing too... a very bare stage with stark white lighting didnt really do much for the vibes. A few coloured gels over the lights would have made some impact and saved Lady Saw from a lot of sweat. The woman worked HARD on that stage... it was sad that she wasnt presented in the manner which she deserved. Still though - she proved herself a true professional and worked against the odds.

Riff Raff's performance was my highlight.

And yeah - the ska support duo was really weird.

I know it's been discussed already, but still ...

It's so important for promoters to organise themselves better, and spread the word wider and futher, including helping community radio shows. On the night I watched a well known radio announcer get denied entry into the gig, he explained how his radio show has been playing Lady Saw tunes and adding promotion to the night. The dude who books acts at the venue pretty much told him to fuck off and walked away disrespectfully. It's definately not helping the scene when a HUGE act such as Lady Saw (grammy winning artist) gets poor publicity, not even a single flyer or poster visible at a reggae night ...

It's sad when when the people who actually help nurture the scene are side lined ...

It was a fun night, still give thanks for the music and live show ! :lighta2:

Seen Yoni

Most people in Melbourne haven't the faintest fukin idea what Jamaican dancehall reggae music is ..argue and curse me all you want but that's the fact and you know I'm right, hardly anyone knows and the ones that do know.. don't know much (of course I am excluding the OzReggae community with this statement).. I'm not surprised....Having lousy promoters handle dancehall vibes.. it's like throwing meat to a dog without teeth... don't expect satisfaction.

I've heard from brederin and sistren and reading here it was a good show... Troublemker I read you..Ska before Lady Saw? give me a fucken break.. Now, whoever is responsible for the promotion needs to get an earful from people doing shit right such as Jesse, and any other local players who truly know and love/respect the music... that's what I would do...call whoever promoted this show and tell them what a pathetic effort it was.. we need to start applying pressure or continue to get played for chumps, such as the poor dude who got told to fuck off after tirelessly promoting the show...shame!

I would have loved to be there but I heard too late and already had other plans.. so real fans suffer in the end too.

Get your shit together Melbourne, we should wear our vest proclaiming we are the Reggae capital in Oz with pride..respect due Chantdown.

Now..if Bunny Wailer gets the same kind of treatment, I'm moving and won't be back for a while.

sounds like a maaaad show!!

Shame about the numbers. With the figures i heard on her performance fee, it would seem someone is probably a bit outta pocket.
...gotta reiterate people should not throw figures out there that are unresonable for the climate. I would hazard a guess that if a reggae promoter the likes of which i am familiar with in Melburnt had got this gig, promo, vibes the whole nine would of been thru the roof!! Its a shame but I can see this happenning all around Oz this year.
Any out bidding or atempts at that went down last year are probably goin to have a detrimental effect on international artists bein picked up by passionate reggae promoters in Sydney and Perth atleast as the money is just not there to b made....atm.

Anyone who is bringin these people in the country....think 6 G's!! thats workable!!!

Sameway, can't wait fo BDO Perth now...Lady Saw gonna b off the hook.....
